Plaka is the capital of Milos and the headquarters of the municipality of Milos, which includes Milos and the nearby rocky islets. According to the 2011 census, it has 749 inhabitants. It took the name Plaka from the flat ground on which the houses were built when the Castle was no longer enough to house the population. It is built at an altitude of 220 meters, overlooking the bay of Milos. The current settlement was created by the abandonment of the previous one, Zefyria or Chora (for this reason Plaka is not called Chora).
Plaka has a strong traditional color, with Cycladic architecture, narrow cobbled streets and small traditional shops, restaurants and cafes. Car traffic is prohibited in the ecosystem. At the highest point of Plaka, on a hill of volcanic origin is the Castle, which was built by Venetians in the 13th century. At the top of the castle is the church of the Assumption of the Virgin or Mesa Panagia, while lower is the Epiphany of Christ or Panagia Thalassitra. In Plaka is also the metropolis of Milos, the Holy Church of the Genesis of the Virgin or Panagia Korfiatissa. The church was built in 1820 and Byzantine-Cycladic style. Many relics and icons are kept in the church, along with the icon of Panagia Korfiatissa.
Plaka is the archeological and folklore museum of Milos, while it houses most of the public services of the island.
